Design Features

Morningstar Intrinsic displayed showing its proportions and heights.
Intrinsic features a tall x-height to support readability at small sizes, while its bolder weight and low stroke contrast enhance screen legibility and create a rhythmic, comfortable reading experience.
Numbers with parts highlighted to show open apertures.
The number 1 has a relatively long top stroke to help balance the space in tabular, or monospaced, environments. Apertures for numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, and 9 are enlarged to improve recognition at small sizes. In particular, numbers 6 and 9 feature straight legs to clearly distinguish them from the number 8.
Large letters and numbers showing highlighted ink traps.
The addition of moderate ink traps reduces the appearance of dark spots in the diagonal junctions of condensed letterforms (V, W, M, and N) at small sizes, improving clarity.

OpenType Features

These features enable greater typographic precision in print and on screen. To activate them for the web and in commonly used desktop applications, see Intrinsic OpenType Features and Activation (.pdf).

Two rows showing monospaced and proportionally-spaced numbers.
Monospaced lining numerals are used in charts and tables for vertical alignment. Proportionally spaced numerals are used when prioritizing character spacing, such as in axis labels and body text.
Two rows showing cap and low-cap letters and numbers.
Capital letters are used for standalone and initial cap-type treatments, while low caps are applied to acronyms, tickers, and all-cap treatments to maintain optical harmony.
Two columns showing incorrect and correct punctuation and math symbols.
Automated case-sensitive punctuation and math symbols are available.
Grid of standard and discretionary ligatures.
Ligatures are available across standard and discretionary sets.
