Morningstar Rating
The Morningstar Rating, also known as the star rating, gives investors a quick, top-level assessment of a stock or fund. Since our founding, the Morningstar Rating has been one of our most recognizable signature assets.
For funds and other managed products, the rating is based on historical returns over three, five, and 10 years, adjusted for risk and costs. For stocks, the rating reflects Morningstar’s estimate of fair value, considering financial health and growth potential.
Solid stars represent three or more years of historical performance.
Outlined stars represent less than three years of historical performance; this rating is based on an extended performance calculation.
The Morningstar Rating may be displayed on its own.
When combined with a security’s name and ticker symbol, the rating becomes part of a fund or stock header.
The rating may be displayed in tables or other data visualization.
The rating is always displayed in Neutral 100 (Black).
Don’t apply any other color to the rating.
Recommended minimum clear space around the rating
The rating should match the cap height and baseline overshoot of round letterforms like “G.” The minimum inline space is equal to a third of the cap height.
At 16px or pts and larger, the points of the stars should touch. Tracking may be increased slightly to improve legibility at smaller sizes.
Don’t apply exaggerated tracking to the rating.
Do align rating artwork flush left.
Don't align rating artwork flush right.
Don’t apply gradients, drop shadows, or other decorative treatments to the stars.
Usage in Text
Always write out the official name, the Morningstar Rating for funds or the Morningstar Rating for stocks, on first reference. The term “star rating” is acceptable on second reference.
Use numerals to express the rating in copy, but spell out the rating when beginning a sentence with them. (“Five-star funds are rare in the small-growth category.”)
Do write out the rating in text.
Don’t use the Morningstar Rating artwork in place of text.
Third-Party Usage
Third parties licensing the Morningstar Rating have additional artwork for their exclusive use.
Third parties must follow Morningstar's display policy for marketing and advertising with our ratings. The trademark designation is always included. For more information, please email the Signature Assets Library team.
The Morningstar Rating seal may be displayed in Neutral 100 (Black) or Morningstar Red.
The Morningstar Rating seal is available for three-, five-, and 10-year ratings.
