Morningstar ESG Risk Rating

The Morningstar ESG Risk Rating, formerly the Morningstar Sustainability Rating, measures how well the companies in a fund manage their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks compared to their peers.

Funds are rated on a 1- to 5-globe scale. Funds with high ESG risk relative to their category peers would receive 1 globe, whereas 5 globes would represent low ESG risk.

Range

The Morningstar ESG Risk Rating assigns a rating of Negligible (5 globes), Low risk (4 globes), Medium risk (3 globes), High risk (2 globes), and Severe risk (1 globe). Unearned globes are always displayed.

Variants

Tips

Don’t apply drop shadows, gradients, or other decorative treatments to the globes.

Usage in Text

Always write out the official name, the Morningstar ESG Risk Rating, on first reference. “ESG Risk Rating” is acceptable on subsequent references. Use numerals to express the rating in copy, but spell out the rating when beginning a sentence with them. (“One-globe funds fall into the Severe category.”)

Capitalize Negligible, Low, Medium, High, and Severe in the context of category or assessment, but lowercase in general references to risk. When referring to the rating’s artwork, “globes” is always lowercase.
